This body of drawings and series of paintings are a response to a novel "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" by Friedrich Nietzsche (1883–1885). The novel was given to me by John Edward Connolly as we exchanged our reading material that is influencing our art practices. Our response took an action by adapting our practice to this new reading materials.
The novel opens with Zarathustra descending from his cave in the mountains after ten years of solitude. He is brimming with wisdom and love, and wants to teach humanity about the overman. In the novel, Nietzsche explains that the overman must be the meaning of the earth. Mankind is just a bridge between animal and overman, and as such, must be overcome. The overman is someone free from all the prejudices and moralities of human society, and who creates his own values and purpose.
Quotes from this novel started to appear as a rich source for my visual ideas.
